<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">In Steve Solomon’s excellent book, Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times, he discusses the benefits of using a fertigation bucket too deliver a low-flow mixture of water and water-soluble fertilizing nutrients to specific plants in the garden (Click Here to read what he has written on the subject). Some other terms for fertigation are "soil drench," "root drench," and "nutrient drench." Click Here to learn about different fertigation solutions.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Solomon uses a common 5-gallon plastic bucket and drills a small hole in the side, near the bottom. The bucket is placed up next to a thirsty plant (squash, cucumber, melon, etc.) and the water flows out in a small stream. Nutrient-rich water saturates the ground and feeds the plant's roots.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">I used Mr. Solomon’s idea to irrigate and fertigate several plants in my garden during the very dry growing season of 2012. I found the basic concept of irrigation & fertigation via a simple bucket to be powerfully effective. The plants that I bucket-irrigated once a week, and fertigated once a month, thrived in the midst of the drought. I got maximum results with a minimum of water.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">But I found that the Solomon fertigation bucket has its shortcomings. Once a plant gets larger it’s impossible to position the bucket up close to the central root zone. Also, a hole in the side of the bucket does not allow you to regulate the flow. These shortcomings are what led me to develop the Planet Whizbang bucket-irrigation (and fertigation) hardware kit.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">My hardware kit makes the irrigation and fertigation bucket more versatile and easier to use. Here’s a picture of the kit. It contains everything you need, except a plastic bucket.
By tightening or loosening a wingnut (by hand) you can regulate the flow of water coming out of the hose. Full flow, slow stream, or drip—all are possible by simply turning the trickle valve.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">The trickle valve, like the hose fitting, is made of solid brass. Brass is more durable than plastic and will never rust, so you can count on these parts to serve you faithfully for a lifetime of gardening.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">(my title)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">"The fertigation bucket economically and effectively places moisture and nutrition below a growing plant .... Fertigation is especially useful for big plants: tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, squash. It can make all the difference for Brussels sprouts or big cabbages, for broccoli or a thriving pepper bush. The results can be remarkable.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It is important when fertigating that the water sinks right in, making a surface wet spot no larger than the little plate under a teacup. This way the moisture penetrates straight down into the subsoil. The speed the water comes out of the bucket determines how widely the moisture spreads. Exactly how large the drainhole should be depends on the soil type; sandy soil usually accepts moisture rapidly, and the water naturally goes deep and not wide. Clay soils are slower to take in moisture, and it spreads out much more broadly when applied from a single drip source. If the soil has 20 percent clay or more, then five gallons (20 liters) will be about right, given every three weeks. But if the soil has little clay, it has far less ability to hold moisture. In that case, perhaps half as much water, say 2-1/2 gallons (10 liters), given every ten days would work better.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Fertigation can be a wise practice even when the plants are otherwise getting enough water. If the soil needs no more moisture, you can make the fertilizer solution a bit stronger and give less volume because it will thin itself out with the moisture already present in the earth.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The traditional fertigation solution is manure or compost tea. Fill a barrel (these days it will probably be a garbage can) with water, dump in a bucketful or two of fresh manure or compost, and allow it to brew for a week. Stir the brew every few days. When it's ready, dip out buckets of fertigation concentrate. Periodically refill the barrel with fresh water and add more manure or compost. You'll determine how much you need to dilute this tea according to your results in using it. When the barrel starts getting too full of solids, empty it out, spread the solids on the garden or toss them into the compost heap, and start a new batch. A variation: Put armloads of comfrey leaves in the brew instead of manure. Other forms of organic matter containing a fair amount of proteins that you could toss into the brew include alfalfa (lucerne), seedmeal, or a quart or two (liter or two) of tankage, meatmeal, or even highly potent bloodmeal (this would really put up the nitorogen content). Urine would also work excellently.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">These days, someone makes a product for doing everything, and fertigation is no exception. Organic gardeners will see an excellent (and rather costly) result using fish emulsion fertilizer, diluted as suggested, which is usually about one part concentrate to 100 parts water. Soluble chemical fertilizers are also highly effective if they contain trace elements as well as NPK. As long as those chemicals do not replace regular additions of organic matter, their use will not damage soil life because they are applied in a highly dilute form."

Old-time gardeners did not plant their crops close together like shown in this picture. Why not? Because Intensive gardening requires a lot of water and energy inputs.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Many gardeners are attracted to the idea of planting their vegetables close together in raised beds, as explained in the popular book by John Jeavons, How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine. There are internet web sites that promote this gardening approach with beautiful pictures of dense plantings, like shown above. But there is a drawback to this way of gardening.... it requires a LOT of water input.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you have the water to spare, and the mechanical systems to deliver it properly, that's fine. But mechanical systems are costly and fossil-fuel dependent. Furthermore, in the event of "hard times," fossil-fuel-dependent watering systems may not be available. That being the case, many people are reconsidering the intensive approach to planting and gardening. They are returning to more traditional gardening methods that do not require intensive irrigation.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Gardeners of the past knew how to grow gardens without the need for massive amounts of artificial irrigation. Steve Solomon is an advocate of such traditional gardening methods. If you would like to know more about this older wisdom, you can learn a lot from the following two articles, which are an online version of Steve Solomon's book, Gardening Without Irrigation: or without much, anyway.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">=====

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The subject of using a fertigation bucket on certain garden plants is discussed throughout the Gardening Without Irrigation book. Here is an excerpt:
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Plants That Like Fertigation
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Brussels sprouts, Kale, Savoy cabbage, Cucumbers, Melons, Squash, Eggplant, Peppers, Tomatoes.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Fertigation every two to four weeks is the best technique for maximizing yield while minimizing water use. I usually make my first fertigation late in June and continue periodically through early September. I use six or seven plastic 5-gallon "drip system" buckets, set one by each plant, and fill them all with a hose each time I work in the garden. Doing 12 or 14 plants each time I'm in the garden, it takes no special effort to rotate through them all more or less every three weeks.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">To make a drip bucket, drill a 3/16" hole through the side of a 4-to-6-gallon plastic bucket about 1/4" up from the bottom, or in the bottom at the edge. The empty bucket is placed so that the fertilied water drains out close to the stem of the plant. It is then filled with liquid fertilizer solution. It takes 5 to 10 minutes for 5 gallons to pass through a small opening, and because of the slow flow rate, water penetrates deeply into the subsoil without wetting much of the surface.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Each fertigation makes the plant grow very rapidly for two or three weeks, more I suspect as a result of improved nutrition than from added moisture. Exactly how and when to fertigate each species is explained in Chapter 5.

.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Chapin Living Waters is a company that has developed a bucket irrigation system for “subsistence farming” in third-world nations. It utilizes a hanging bucket that feeds into lengths of plastic drip tape arranged down rows of vegetables. The company says the bucket gets filled once a day and can water a garden that will feed a small family.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I applaud the effort to help so many people. If you have an interest in doing something like this in your garden (or maybe even with several "patio plantings"), you can experiment with the idea using the Planet Whizbang brass hose-fitting in the bottom of a bucket, like they show in their pictures.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This idea is, however, not something I have an interest in doing because dealing with lengths of flimsy plastic drip tape with tiny holes can be problematic. If the water in the bucket is not filtered and clean, small debris can clog up the holes, and there are often problems getting sufficient water pressure to the end of the drip tape line when using a low pressure system.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Besides that, I'm of the mind that third-world people in areas with minimal rainfall would be much better served by utilizing Steve Solomon's wisdom about gardening in such soils, and by supplementing water needs of certain vegetables with the fertigation/irrigation bucket, as explained in his book, Gardening Without Irrigation: or without much, anyway.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When I look at the internet pictures where the Living Waters system is being used I usually see lush green vegetation in the background. So there is subsoil moisture and some rainfall, and Steve Solomon's dry-gardening techniques would be very useful in such situations. You can find a link to a free copy of his book Here.

And I even wrote an article for Fine Homebuilding magazine about water levels (see picture above).

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here’s how a water level works, and one way to put the tool to use....

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A water level works on the principle that water always seeks to level itself. Theoretically speaking, if we had a square room that was sealed off so that we could fill it part way with water, once the water was in the room and stopped moving, it would be perfectly level.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If we were then able to make a mark at the top of the water in each corner of the room, and drained the water out, we would have for reference marks that were perfectly level with each other. Such reference marks would be very useful for numerous remodeling projects in the room.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If we measure up or down the same amount from each mark, we can use those marks to snap a level chalk line or run a level string line. These accurately level lines could then be used to install a level row of cabinets, or windows, or establish a level top line for wainscoting. If we wanted to re-frame a new floor, the marks would help us to get it perfectly level. The same would apply to framing in a lower ceiling in a high-ceilinged room. We could also use the level line to pitch a plumbing drain pipe from a bathroom above.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It is, of course, not practical to fill a room with water, but the exact same outcome can be achieved with a bucket of water and a length of vinyl tubing. Set the bucket on a sawhorse or stepladder in the middle of the room. Take one end of the tubing (with the other end attached to the bucket) to one corner of the room and hold it against the wall. When the water in the hose stops moving up and down, the level of water in the hose will be level with the water in the bucket.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you do this, making a mark in each corner of the room, without moving the water reservoir bucket, and without losing any water out of the hose, you will have four reference marks that are perfectly level with each other—just like if you had filled the room with water.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Note: it is important that the water hose have no kinks or other obstructions (don’t stand on it), that there be no air bubbles, and that the end of the hose is not obstructed. Also, some red food coloring in the water makes it easier to see the water in the hose.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I’ve used a water level outdoors for such things as leveling forms for small concrete pads, laying concrete block walls, and putting siding on a house.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Years ago, I spoke with an elderly man who had been a mason for 30 years. He had helped build many notable buildings in Central New York starting back in the early 1940’s. He told me that water levels were commonly used on these projects.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So when you get a Planet Whizbang bucket irrigation hardware kit, don’t forget that it can also be used as a water level when the need arises.
